Exploiting Android’s Stagefright Vulnerability

Richard Chirgwin reports for The Register that ‘Millions’ of Android mobes [are] vulnerable to new Stagefright exploit – Paper lays out how to bypass Google’s ASLR.

The story is based on a report from Northbit researchers about how they ‘properly’ exploited the Stagefright vulnerability. To put it into perspective, the Northbit paper states that:

Even though a universal exploit with no prior knowledge was not achieved, because it is necessary to build lookup tables per ROM, it has been proven practical to exploit in the wild.

While Google has released patches for Stagefright, Chirgwin rightly points out that many vendors may have failed to distribute them.
