Out of jail, not out of the woods

I’ve just seen a useful article by Costin Raiu on iPhone Jailbreaking, Greenpois0n and SHAtter Trojans. Greenpois0n is the promised jailbreaking tool from pod2g which will, it’s claimed, make it possible to jailbreak any iPhone via a vulnerability in the bootROM. (All the vulnerabilities in earlier versions of iOS that were used by jailbreakers were patched in iOS 4.0.2 or iOS 4.1, so 4Gs are currently unjailbroken.)

However, Costin tells us that googling or searching torrent sites turns up quite a few archives claiming to be Greenpois0n which are actually Trojans (keyloggers and the like). As far as I know they’re all Windows binaries, not Apple-targeting. So far, so predictable.

What I wasn’t aware of, though, is that there are also a number of fake jailbreaking sites around that claim to be selling jailbreaking tools that work on even current iPhones. Costin says they’re selling for $25-$40, and obviously they aren’t going to work on current iPhones. And that’s assuming that they don’t do anything actively malicious (apart from scamming people for small amounts of money).

Jailbreaking may be legal (Jailbreaking in EuropePrison Breaks Now Legal?), but that doesn’t make it safe.
